Protecting Children Together: Expanding the Reach of Operation MakeSafe

Introducing Operation MakeSafe, a vital programme designed to prevent and disrupt child sexual exploitation across England and Wales. Originally launched in 2011 and relaunched nationally in 2024, MakeSafe works in partnership with police forces, safeguarding partnerships, and key industries such as hotels, taxis, and other public-facing services.

With over 500 offences identified in hotels alone in one year, the programme targets high-risk environments and strengthens community vigilance against online and in-person exploitation. Through tailored training, shared resources, and a unified approach, Operation MakeSafe aims to ensure a consistent and effective national response.

Going forward, the programme encourages local safeguarding children’s partnerships (LSCPs) to embed MakeSafe into their strategies, businesses to include MakeSafe training in staff inductions, and agencies to collaborate in strengthening delivery and impact.

Together, these actions reinforce a shared commitment to protecting vulnerable children and creating safer communities.
